REUSE OF MATERIALS: MUSSEL SHELLS

At the Aalborg plant in Denmark, mussel shells from a local food processing plant are used as a recycled waste product in the limestone quarry.

After being unloaded, the shells of the mussels are spread on the quarry pit to provide a support surface for depth excavators and the conveyor belts. The shells ensure stable operation especially in the event of humidity and ice.

The shells are then removed along with the excavated limestone and recycled into cement production.
